About the Solution:

RAD2 Anaerobic Digester Systems: Analysis, Design, Funding, Implementation & Management

Recent advances in digester technology paired with development of high-quality, low-cost combined heating and power systems have made anaerobic digesters an attractive option for many modern dairy farms. As more digesters come online, this technology has become increasingly reliable. By integrating established technology with modern farming practices, Larsen Engineers is a leader in the Anaerobic Digester Revolution.

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Anaerobic Digester technology:

  • Is proven technology for odor, GHG and pathogen reduction and energy production
  • Has a long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Require proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Usually requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Usually requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
Larsen Engineers is the first company in the US to use the novel approach of using membrane materials and earth to develop the anaerobic digestion vessel, exterior heating, and in-vessel mixing.  Their flagship project, commissioned in October, 2014, is located at Spruce Haven Farm, LLC (Auburn, NY).  This digester is paired with a McLanahan sand-manure separation system (SMS) where the SMS effluent is processed by the Larsen Engineers Recirculated Anaerobic Ditch Digester (RAD2).  Spruce Haven Farm reported in a Cornell Dairy Environmental Systems case study that the project was financially feasible due to the reduced capital cost over the many other technologies investigated.
