About the Solution:

On May 28, 2024 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed Bovaer® meets safety and efficacy requirements for use in lactating dairy cattle. Elanco Animal Health announced that Bovaer® (3-NOP), a first-in-class methane-reducing feed ingredient, will soon be available for use in the U.S. dairy industry.

The Food and Drug Administrations’ (FDA) comprehensive, multi-year review shows that the product meets safety and effectiveness requirements to be sold in the United States. More than 70 peer-reviewed studies and 100 on-farm trials across 20 countries have shown that Bovaer consistently reduces enteric methane emissions. Feeding one tablespoon of Bovaer per lactating dairy cow per day can reduce methane emissions about 30% or approximately 1.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions annually while creating opportunity for dairy farmers to be financially rewarded for reducing their dairy’s carbon footprint. Bovaer works by suppressing the enzyme in the cow’s rumen that forms methane. Feeding one million cows Bovaer would reduce emissions equivalent to removing more than 285,000 cars from the road for a year.

Feeding Bovaer to cows provides a scalable and credible way for dairy farmers to benefit from being good stewards of the environment by being financially rewarded for implementing on-farm sustainability interventions.

  • Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Elanco Animal Health has recently been added to the Newtrient catalog. Newtrient will continue to work with Elanco Animal Health to further refine the cost and performance information on this solution.

To receive carbon credits for using Bovaer®, Dairy farmers incorporate Bovaer into their rations and then quantify the effect using carbon market-friendly tools which then quantify greenhouse gas emissions reductions. In addition to the carbon marketplace, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $89 million in funding to support farms using technologies like Bovaer® to reduce their methane emissions.

Newtrient will update this entry as more information becomes available and as new commercial dairy installations come online.
