About the Solution:

Biological desulphurization of gas streams

One of the most efficient systems for the biological removal of sulfides from biogas is the BIDOX® (BIological Desulphurization by OXidation). No chemicals are needed to operate the BIDOX® system. The installation requires limited maintenance, is equipped with little process control and manages to reduce the amount of H2S in biogas to levels below 50 ppm. These features have a significant positive impact on the life duration and running costs of the CHP engine and efficiently facilitate the upgrade of biogas to natural gas quality.

Biogas desulphurisation using the BIDOX® is not associated with odor emission, because the system is completely closed. In addition there is no need for internal cleaning or biomass discharge.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Colsen is an international company with extensive experience in the treatment of dairy and other animal agricultural wastes in Europe. Colsen is actively looking for partners in the USA and Canada to do wastewater and manure treatment projects with their technologies.

Colsen has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, although their process appears to be suited for use on dairy manure, Newtrient is not aware of any current dairy based projects in North America. Newtrient will work with Colsen to refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with commercial dairy installations in North America.
