Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Chemical flocculation technologies remove the non-dissolved particles from the waste stream typically resulting in irrigation quality “tea water”:

  • Produces a clay like cake which is high in phosphorus and with significant amounts of organic nitrogen.
  • Supported technologies include belt presses, centrifuges, dissolved air flotation systems and others; all requiring flocculants to achieve high rates of solids removal
  • There is significant variation of chemical and energy use depending on site and by technology

LWR has recently added the First WaveTM system to their product line and are aggressively marketing to the dairy industry in the United States. In California specifically LWR has made strides to increase adoption of their technology through a partnership with Figure 8 Environmental to distribute the First Wave or CLARA system. This system has not undergone third party testing but is reported to achieve significant phosphorus removal, there is limited information on costs and nutrient concentration in the final product at this time.

The First WaveTM system is the same front end system that is used on the full scale LWR system but it eliminates the costs and operational issues associated with the membranes and does not claim to produce "clean" water. The fact that the membrane system has been removed reduces the cost and operational complexity of the system but does not reduce the costs associated with the flocculant used for removal of the TSS.

Newtrient has visited a LWR system on a dairy site in the United States that was originally installed as a full system but is now running as a First WaveTM system. The system visited was not operating full time, it was only operated 16 hours per day and the operator indicated that they were using a third party polymer for flocculation. The system appeared to be removing a significant amount of solids and the farm, although they were trying to minimize polymer use, reported significant phosphorus reduction in the final effluent.

Newtrient has reservations with this technology due to our lack of insight into the actual on-farm performance and value proposition. Newtrient has and will continue to reach out to LWR to get cost, performance and operating data on the system.
