Bion – Multi-stage Evaporation & Distillation

PROVEN COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT OF LIVESTOCK WASTE

About the Company:

Bion’s patented technology platform provides comprehensive and cost-effective treatment of livestock waste and recovers valuable assets from the waste stream, including renewable energy, nutrients and clean water. The technology produces commercially-equivalent byproducts and all environmental mitigation is independently third-party verified. Bion’s technology is a seamless, cost-effective interconnect to anaerobic digestion systems on large scale livestock production facilities that addresses the issues of nitrogen impacts from airborne ammonia and land-applied digestate in a cost-effective manner.

About the Solution:

The original Kreider Farms installation of Bion's technology converted ammonia to nitrogen gas, which successfully addressed the pollution issue but lost the ammonia as a potential byproduct. Beginning in September 2014, Bion began filing patents on its 3rd generation (3G) technology, designed to recover and convert nutrients in the waste stream, including ammonia, into commercially-equivalent byproducts. Technology development and refinement is ongoing and subsequent patent filings have and will continue to be filed. Bion has completed its development work and will be installing a small commercial system at Kreider Farms in March 2017 that will supply material for field growth trials of its ammonia and other fertilizer products. All environmental reductions to both air and water are third-party verified; these reductions have been accepted as equivalent to point source reductions and are therefore eligible to be used as qualified offsets to federal Total Maximum Daily Load mandates.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Nitrification/Denitrification Technologies:

  • No saleable product produced in most systems
  • Vermiculture and some other technologies do produce salable by-products (i.e. worms and worm castings)
  • Traditional and modified forms exist with years of experience treating municipal wastewater
  • Uses large, multiple reaction chambers seeded with both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria
  • Traditional concerns are capital cost, requiring large dedicated tanks and large power consumption for aeration.
  • Proven technology for phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, odor control and pathogen reduction
  • This technology loses nitrogen as non-reactive nitrogen gas

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Nitrification/Denitrification Technologies:

  • No saleable product produced, nitrogen lost to the atmosphere
  • Nitrogen removed from manure and released to environment as non-reactive nitrogen gas
  • Traditional and modified forms exist with years of experience treating municipal wastewater
  • Uses large, multiple reaction chambers seeded with both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria
  • Traditional concerns are capital cost, requiring large dedicated tanks and large power consumption for aeration
The Bion technology has been developed to follow anaerobic digestion and produces renewable value added by-products,as well as helping to address water quality issues. The process was developed and designed for cost effective use by large scale livestock production facilities (>250,000 gallons per day of livestock waste). Bion is currently working to scale down the system while maintaining cost effectiveness.   Bion is one of the few companies that have a verification plan and environmental reduction strategy that has been third party verified and approved for use as qualified offsets to federal Total Maximum Daily Load mandates. Bion’s technology platform captures and converts ammonia into a high concentration ammonia by-product. The system is currently being tested but the projected capture and conversion of nitrogen into ammonia by-product is expected to be at least 85%.Separated solids are subsequently able to be captured and converted into commercially valuable by-products using multiple technologies including Bion’s own proprietary technology.   Bion has and continues to support legislation in Pennsylvania that will enable livestock producers to monetize their third party verified nutrient reductions under a competitive bidding program. Bion’s current revenue model consists of energy sales, carbon and nutrient credits and sale of commercially equivalent fertilizer by-products.
